To prepare for dark winter in the Arctic, Alaskans must hunt, fish, and overcome challenges as they travel through unfamiliar territories. With the last of the longer days coming to an end, they must stockpile resources.
2 Howl of the Wild
From scouting for resources in sub-zero temperatures to hiking the countryside in search of food, those who dwell on the frontier of the Arctic must do whatever is in their power to secure their homesteads for the cold that lies ahead.
3 The 11th Hour
As the days grow shorter in the Arctic, Alaskans struggle to accomplish their daily tasks. For Glenn and Andy, freezing temperatures and thick ice mean increased difficulties for trapping. In conditions such as these, adaptation is the key.

In the darkest time of the year, Alaskans must use the brief daylight to hunt for food and sharpen their survival skills. The only way to push through the gruelling temperatures and conditions of dark winter is to burn the midnight oil.

A late freeze in the Arctic makes for dangerous conditions, and presents new challenges to Alaskans. Travel on the treacherous trails becomes riskier, and a lack of water forces Alaskans to use their own ingenuity to adapt and survive.

To maximise the final weeks of winter, Alaskans travel to higher territories to build shelter, gather important firewood, harvest new food sources, and freight heavy loads across the still-frozen landscape.
