KilimanjaroJOURNEY INTO WINE

Description:

Journey into Wine introduces the infectious personality and formidable knowledge of French wine expert Isabelle Legeron as she explores the world of wine. Her honest, simple approach affords a valuable insight into what is all too often a rarefied and obscure subject, illuminating us with her own passion for wine.
In this series, she travels to South Africa and tours the country’s best-known vineyards in Cape Town, Constantia, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and the Whale Coast. Along the way, she gets to know the people that produce wonderful wine. She’s also introduced to some of the extraordinary local success stories and epic landscapes that typify the country’s vibrant character.

The English version of the entire series is now available to purchase on dvd:

EPISODE 1
Cape Town, February 2007

Isabelle’s Diary…
“Arrived in Cape Town more than a little travel worn – quite a trek from London – but it didn’t last long as there’s an unbelievable buzz about this town that infuses you with real excitement for the new South Africa and there’s nothing like a brisk walk up Lion’s Head to replenish the soul! And at sunset, the views out over town and the Atlantic Ocean are extraordinary and Cape Tonians regularly hit the rock for wine & sundowners, set against the backdrop of Table Mountain. Awesome…in every sense of the word.’

EPISODE 2
Stellenbosch, February 2007

Isabelle’s Diary…
“I travelled inland to the heart of the Cape Winelands, home to some of the world’s most cutting edge wine research where, amongst other things, they are studying the effects of wine on health. Stellenbosch is also the birthplace of South Africa’s very own grape variety – Pinotage – a union of Pinot Noir and Hermitage. And although I used to baulk at the thought of its wines, I have had a few surprises. In fact, the whole journey so far has been astonishing and I’ve now even visited a DIY winemaker who makes some extraordinary tipple right in his backyard! I have crushed grapes with South Africa’s first black female winemaker, surfed its shark infested waters with a groovy grape farmer and explored wineries galore, including a biodynamic vineyard that harvests according to the moon…”

EPISODE 3
Paarl, February 2007

Isabelle’s Diary…
“How better to visit vineyards than to gallop through them on horseback or play pétanque between rows of vines with one of South Africa’s top winemakers? What a thrill! I left Stellenbosch en route for the heart of Afrikaans South Africa where I learnt about the country’s complex, troubling history through the archaeology of one winery. Ended up in Franschhoek, or the French corner, South Africa’s culinary capital, where I discovered how a handful of Huguenot asylum seekers changed South Africa’s winemaking fortunes forever.
Along the way, I managed to hijack a tourist tour to share tips on tasting wine, visited the creators of South Africa’s answer to Champagne and have had the honour of meeting the man behind the brand that had France’s winemakers up in arms…”

EPISODE 4
The Whale Coast, February 2007

Isabelle’s Diary…
“I’ve headed seaward once again to Africa’s most southern vineyards planted on some of the oldest soils on earth. In fact, some of the grapes here are even grown on Antarctica substrata!
The journey has taken me through some of South Africa’s most stunning scenery to the ‘heaven on earth’ valley, the ideal place for producing world-class pinot noirs and chardonnays. I have discovered how our environment affects our appreciation of wine, put my taste buds to the test after jumping off a cliff and have met a generation of new winemakers intent on relegating the Apartheid era firmly to the past. To top it all, I’ve even visited the world’s first fair-trade winery, which has given me an invaluable insight into the wine world of tomorrow, a fitting end to the beginning of my journeys into wine…
