Sameba Cathedral
This is the main Orthodox Christian Cathedral in Georgia situated above the Mtkvari River in Old Tbilisi. It’s a modern cathedral built to commemorate 1500 years of the Georgian Orthodox Church and over 100 architects competed for the commission. The foundation stone for Archil Mindiashvili’s winning design was laid in 1995 and the cathedral was completed on St. Georges Day 2004.

Rustaveli Avenue
Tbilisi’s main avenue is named after the 12th century Georgian poet who wrote ‘The Knight in the Panther’s Skin’, the Georgian national poem. Freedom Square is at one end, flanked by the Georgian Central Bank and the City Hall, and contains the Liberty Monument depicting St George slaying the dragon. Freedom Square has historical significance as the site of various mass demonstrations – for instance the chief demonstration for Georgia's independence from the Soviet Union. The avenue itself is a magnet for shopaholics with designer boutiques and high end outlets.

Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens lie just behind the fortress. They are great getaway with flower beds, exotic greenhouses and wilder areas. Originally established as a royal pleasure garden in 1636, the gardens now cover 128 hectares of which 85 are cultivated containing over 4500 species! It’s a popular backdrop for wedding photographs.

Narikala Fortress
The Narikala Fortress on the hilltop dominates the city skyline. First built by the Persians in the fourth century, it has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. Then in 1827 a massive explosion of Russian munitions destroyed not only the fort but also the Church of St Nicolas. Recently rebuilt, the Narikala is now an impressive tourist attraction and visitors are also able to walk along the battlements.

The National Museum
This museum is known for its impressive collection of pre-Christian gold and silver. The treasury contains 25 display cases in three rooms with articles dating back to the Bronze Age including the earliest example of Georgian jewellery. There are also coins, a display of carpets and weapons, including a sword once owned by Napoleon.
