It’s brave, it’s bizarre, it’s Budapest to Bamako and it’s back! The rally that goes where the Paris–Dakar rally fears to tread! This year 150 teams try to navigate the perilous road to Mali bringing €500,000 worth of aid with them. Rattling along with the ice cream truck and the 50m long articulated bus, are the 2 Kevin’s, Travel Channel’s very own team, in their mystery car. As the country’s beauty sport slip by, including Miss Hungary 2008, they soon find it’s more difficult than they thought to even get from Hungary to Spain. Clue - it’s not via Croatia!
As the teams battle their way towards Bamako they are faced with predictable problems such as mechanical failures and the less predictable perils of suicidal camels indulging in a game of ’chicken’ across the road. Saving the local wildlife can be a dangerous business as one team of goat lovers find out to their cost.
The Budapest to Bamako motto of ’Anyone, by anything, by any means’ still holds and the difference between success and failure often lies in the skilled hands of many a Western Saharan mechanic en route to Bamako. Make sure you tune in to witness the madness unfold.
