Thanks for checking out our AMERICAN CIVIL WAR TRAIL site and it’s great to see that you’ve been inspired by the programme to find out more about how you can explore this fascinating period of American history for yourself.
Over 600,000 people died, children aged 9 fought on the battlefield, families were torn apart, and at the heart of it a struggle to free more than four million slaves; history rarely gets as dramatic as this. The Civil War was fought as far afield as California and the cotton mills of northern England but within the Capital Region, encompassing Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC, you can capture the flavour of the time and relive some of its most important episodes.
Whether you follow our daily itinerary or just plunge in to check out what each location has to offer, the following pages provide details on the sites we visited plus recommendations of places to stay and eat. I’ve also thrown in a few comments of my own, a bit of a personal perspective.
And finally, you get to share your Civil War experiences and advice with others, and get the answers to your questions in our YOUR CIVIL WAR section. Our team will provide the answers to help you make the most of exploring the defining moment of American history during its sesquicentennial – 150th to you and me - commemorations.
Enjoy and looking forward to hearing from you.
