5 WAYS OF HOLIDAYING GREENER AROUND SALZBURG
Sumit Bose travelled to Salzburg with Austrian Airlines and stayed at Hotel Stein.
Werfenweng
Werfenweng is among Austria’s leaders when it comes to holidaying green. Environmental responsibility is the way of life in this small mountain town. With a project they call “soft mobility” the people of Werfenweng have discovered an eco-friendly and fun way to explore their piece of Austria. Catch a train or take you car about forty-five kilometres from Salzburg into the small town. Once you arrive however, you bid farewell to your car keys for the remainder of your visit. From that point on you are free to enjoy various environmentally friendly activities and take your pick of a fleet of electric vehicles, including electric scooters and bicycles. Your mobility is 100 percent dependent upon renewable electric power or manual strength. Transportation is not the only focus in Werfenweng. Visitors may participate in swimming, hiking, paragliding, and other family-oriented activities.

Fraulein Marias Bicycle Tour
This is a fun and eco-friendly way to tour the city. The focus is the 1965 musical “The Sound of Music”. Tourists get a thorough behind-the-scenes look at the classic movie and view various locations in Salzburg where scenes were filmed. The entire tour lasts 3.5 hours with plenty of resting spots for breaks and refreshments. The tours are given daily between May and September.

Maribell Gardens
The Maribell Gardens were opened to the public in 1854 and have been a popular attraction ever since. Tourists and locals come to enjoy the floral atmosphere and view the statues of mythical figures such as The Pegasus, said to be the ideal starting point for a run down the hedge arcade along the Grand Paterre as seen in “The Sound of Music”. Tourists can also enter the hedge maze and see the Heckentheatre, which is still used today for performances in the summer.
