5 OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN JAMAICA

Amanda Hudson produced this report on Jamaica.  Amanda and the team travelled to Jamaica with Virgin Holidays and stayed at the Half Moon Hotel and Spa in Montego Bay

Negril Beach

Jamaica has over 200 miles of coastline and the beaches are one of the island’s biggest draws. One of the most famous is Negril’s seven mile beach, considered one of the best in the world. The sand dunes are lined with hotels of different kinds, from all-inclusive resorts to family hotels and more private options. South of downtown Negril is West End Road, known as the Cliff Area. It offers easy access to good snorkelling and diving.

Rose Hall

All over Jamaica you will find the remains of old plantations and great houses like Rose Hall. Here slaves served and masters grew rich on sugar, cocoa, tobacco and cotton. Rose Hall is one of the most popular great houses with tourists. The legend of its owner Annie Palmer, also known as “The White Witch of Rose Hall”, is well known and involves black magic, a beautiful heroine and the cruelty Anne meted out to her slaves. Today there’s a guided tour in the restored building that includes a visit to the tomb of the old witch.

Dunn’s River Falls

The island’s top attraction, Dunn’s River Falls, is visited by thousands of holidaymakers every year. The falls are 600 ft. of cascading water emptying out onto a sandy beach by the Caribbean Sea.  If you’re not satisfied with just looking, you can climb the falls, either by yourself, or with a guided group.

Kingston

Close to the Blue Mountains, on the south coast, is the capital of Jamaica, Kingston. Apart from its proximity to the mountains the town has a National Gallery, theatres and a grand Georgian square. Here you will also find the Bob Marley Museum. The museum is located in Marley's original studio where he recorded many of his songs. Lots of tourists also take the chance to stop off at Devon House – a splendid old building built in 1881 for the first black Jamaican Millionaire.

Firefly

This is the Jamaican home of Noel Coward and also the place where the English actor and playwright is buried. A guided tour will show you around his art studio where he was taught to paint by Winston Churchill. In the dining room the table is laid just as it was when the Queen Mother came to lunch in 1965.
