5 TOP ATTRACTIONS IN BRITTANY

Gareth travelled to Brittany with Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth to St Malo.

Here are our top 5 Attractions in Brittany:

Pointe du Raz

This granitic outcrop on the western end of Europe consists of two rocky peaks and has recently received the label: Grand Site de France. Visitors can stroll along wild heather and gorse bushes and enjoy the boundless view over the “Baie des Trépassés”, or take a guided tour along the “last rock before the ocean”.

Pont Aven

With a museum, municipal artists’ studios and 60 exhibition venues, Pont-Aven has firmly established a place as a centre for art and artists. Among others, famous painter Paul Gauguin found inspiration in this picturesque country village.

Granite facades from the 17th and 18th centuries can be seen from the Rue des Meunières to the Place Royal. These were the homes of businessmen, royal officers and millers; today, they serve as a reminder of the town's rich commercial history.

Dinan

Situated upriver on the Rance estuary, which opens out onto the Emerald Coast between Dinard and St-Malo, Dinan is surrounded  by an unbroken line of the oldest and most extensive ramparts in Brittany. The ramparts, together with other examples of monumental architecture and the many half-timbered houses, constitute a major asset for the surviving medieval town. The highlight however is the commanding 130ft granite aquedyct hovering over he River Rance.

Bell Isle

Brittany has more islands than any other part of Western Europe and the largest is Belle Isle with its natural harbours, deep rias, long sandy beaches, jagged cliffs and grottos. In Le Palais, “the capital”, there’s a citadel built in 1549 to protect the island against enemies. The Citadel’s museum showcases the ramparts, casemates, powder reserve and the dungeons.  Goulphar lighthouse is also a popular stop. It is 82 m high and has a view that extends several miles out to sea. Finally, Port Coton’s "needles" are a significant landmark, made famous by Monet who painted them 36 times in as many different weather conditions and as many different lights as possible.

Carnac

The signature archaeological sites of Brittany are its megaliths. Imposing standing stones were raised in their thousands all over the region: gathering or burial places, astronomical landmarks or boundary stones marking the frontier between two worlds? Their meaning remains uncertain. Carnac’s megaliths represent Europe’s most important prehistoric site, older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids.
