A RAINBOW JOURNEY
A Rainbow Journey celebrates South Africa’s 10 years of Democracy.
Programme One, Footsteps Through Time, looks at how the country has changed over the past 10 years and how its history has shaped South Africa’s present. The journey starts on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in exile. We then visit Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum and Soweto, once home to both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu and one of the townships at the heart of the struggle against the Apartheid regime.
We then look back a little further visiting Sterkfontein, known as the Cradle of Humankind and the site of the earliest traces of humanity on the planet. And in the Ukhahlamba-Drakensbergs Mountains we discover two of the 600 rock art sites belonging to the San people.
Our final stop is the battlefields of KwaZulu Natal, taking in the Isandlwana and the more commercial Shakaland.
Treading
The Landscape, Programme Two, looks at South Africa’s
diverse scenery and the activities on offer. We kick off on
safari exploring the bush of Kruger Park, Lukimbi Lodge and
Kapama Game Reserve where we experience Mpumalanga’s stunning
scenery on an elephant safari, night-time game drive and hot
air ballooning. KwaZulu Natal’s World Heritage Sight,
the St Lucia Wetlands, is one of the country’s most beautiful
and varied eco system and a huge attraction for nature lovers.
Finally we explore South Africa’s urban culture taking
in Durban, the hub of KwaZulu Natal’s business and industry
and one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the world, and
notorious Johannesburg, which despite being one of the world’s
youngest urban players, is the most powerful commercial centre
on the African continent.
